English Family

English Community of STAIN pontianak held a program named Ramadhan English Camp (REC) 2012. It was begun on 27th-29th July 2012 in ex Alianyang Center building. As a coordinator of EC STAIN Pontianak, my friends and I prepared this program for about one month. They were Zuraida, Eni Desiyani, and Titah Saputri. Besides, there were some people who helped us like Eko, Azmi, Suci, Yanto, Adi, and Bagus. At the first time we were really confused about what activities we should arrange to attract the participants. Long by long, we found some activities that perhaps beneficial for them. Because of holiday season, we just got four participants outside of club and two participants who are the members of EC. Furthermore, some of the organizing committee has never attended a program like this, so they became the participants too.

First day, I felt trembling when we held the Opening Ceremony. Mr. Hermansyah as a Vice Chairman in Students Division had already come but guests and participants hadn’t come yet. I wished it’s not a bad symptom that this program couldn’t run well. One of the hardest part of this program was all participants must speak in English 24 hours. I knew it would be hard even for me, so we decided to simplify the rule, they may speak Bahasa Indonesia in discussion session. After Opening Ceremony, we introduced ourselves in a very unique way (thanks to our supervisor, Mr. Segu who told us this way). We were supposed to mention our name; real and western name, our hometown, our feelinng, opinion, and motivation. Then, we did some games to help memorizing our friend’s names. Because of Friday, we should finish our activity soon because the man would do Friday Prayer. When Friday prayer, the woman went to Alianyang Center directly and I caught up later. On the way, one of the facilitator phoned Zu because of Alianyang Center was locked. ‘Oh my dear!’ I thought, I hope it’s not another bad thing for us. When I reached Alianyang Center, the participants were sitting on the terrace floor. ‘Poor them!’ My heart said. After waiting for a long time, finally the keeper of the building came and opened it. ‘Okay! Here we go! Time to rock the three days with English!’ I told them. We cleaned up the place which we slept on, tidy up our clothes while waiting for the man come for Friday Prayer, and ready for the first session of this program. I thought the first day ran well. We began the program with Part of Speech discussion, Listening to the song; Hero from Mariah Carey, and did some games like missing lyrics. Then I gave them what I had got from Pare, Tenses song, and did some discussion too. An amazing thing was when we could sit and share together in English while waiting for breaking our fasting because it’s a Ramadhan month. Time to fasting for one month for Moslems. We ate together while making some jokes, discussed something, prayed Maghrib, Isya, and Tarawih. After that, we had a discussion again about Opening Mind by Social and Cultures. This was about the differences between Indonesian and western cultures and how each people treat others. The participants were interested in this discussion and asked many things about the cultures, social life, even education system.

The next day we also had a lot of discussion session with two lecturers from STAIN Pontianak, Mr. Segu and Mr. Maladi. However, before the discussion, we watched movie entitled “The Blind Side” first. The movie told about social and culture too, especially in America between Black and White people there. We paused the movie for a while and stepped to the next discussion about pronounciation and easy tenses. I was sure that the participants got a lot form Mr. Segu, even my friends and I as facilitator. Mr. Segu gave us some interesting videos to watch and learn English. One thing I like from the participants was their willingness to speak English even it still mixed with Bahasa. I just need their intention to study and learn English in this program. Moreover, they also learned how the way of speaking English easily. They got it from Mr. Maladi. I didn’t attend this session because Zu and I should go to find something and the main point was we needed the fresh air much! :D There was a bad condition when the gentlemen came late in one session. Even it was just handled by facilitator, they were late for 45 minutes and it was really an unforgivable condition. Zu and I got angry, but just at the moment and we continued our activity later. The last session for the second day was played “Never Ending Story” games and continued watching movie. Having watched movie, we shared and discussed it, and everybody spoke at that time. They had different idea about the movie, but they had same point of view about reaching dreams, strong intention, good effort, then those could alter the main character of the movie. He came from zero to hero, from no one to be someone. Having Sahur together was also unforgettable moment for us. Because it was really difficult to wake them up after all of the tiring activities.

The last day would be a precious day for the participants and I. We had an outbond, did sport and games while watching sunrise. It was held on the top of Alianyang Center building so we could watch a beautiful sunrise clearly. We did “I have never/ I have never been” game and I was one of the lost participants in this game. Then, we played “Guess Songs” which we should sing a song from one word that would be given. The last we played “One Word” game, it was about mention one word then our friends should mention another word with the last alphabet from the word that already mentioned before. Furthermore, we finished the outbond, cleaned up the building and our stuff, packed all the things and waited the last session of this day that was an introduction from the other English Clubs in Pontianak. They were Khatulistiwa English Community (KEY) and Excellence English Studio. The participants were so impressed by KEY and Excellence because they had a new family in English community. Besides, they learned many new things about managing a community. Finishing this session we had a photo session with all of REC participants and KEY plus Excellence. We had a very good and valuable time with them. We shared and asked many question about language community. They were also happy getting invloved in this program. As like English Community of STAIN Pontianak had found new family and new places to practice English. Finally, we closed REC program with some impression words from participants. We also had three best participants, they were Bagus, Sasa, and Ninda. Keep studying, guys! I hope we all can work together and succeed at last. I found many things from this program. But the important one, I found family here, they were in English Community of STAIN Pontianak. See you on other programs, good luck!
